Virgem Suta have established themselves in the Portuguese musical landscape because of a couple of guitars, their voice, a handful of memorable songs and the uncountable tours of concerts in Portugal. Nuno Figueiredo and Jorge Benvinda exude portugalness and are not afraid to show it. They are, however, so contemporary in their approach that their traditional roots are only there as they could not be elsewhere. They play “adufe” (a traditional square tambourine of Moorish origin) and “cavaquinho” (small guitar which was a precursor to the ukulele) as it is natural to them. They add to the mix a whole lot of irony in the lyrics which only contributes to their uniqueness.
